CHAPTER TWELVE
"Give me five minutes alone with that guy," Rob said angrily. "It would make me very happy to drown him in one of his oil wells."
An hour had passed since Josie and I had our confrontation with the oil king. We were sitting at our dinner table with Mike, Rob, Grandma Rosa, and Cookie. Gianna and Johnny had chosen to have dinner alone in their room with Alex. To everyone's surprise and amazement, Mom and Dad had been invited to sit at the captain's table. Talk of the mortuary event had reached the bow, and the captain had personally sent an invitation to my father. Yes, Dad's moment in the sun had arrived. I only hoped that the captain wouldn't live to regret it.
Josie dipped a piece of shrimp into cocktail sauce. "It's not worth getting upset about, babe."
"Are you kidding?" Mike finished off his glass of beer. "Rob's got the right attitude. That old coot propositioned you, and he also threatened my wife. He'd better throw himself overboard before we do it for him."
I dug into my mashed potatoes with a vengeance. "I shouldn't have said anything, but he made me so angry."
Grandma Rosa patted my hand. "It is good that you stood up to him, cara mia. How shameful and sad that he would use women that way."
"To be fair, Sarah Leigh used him too," Mike pointed out. "That doesn't excuse how Chet propositioned Josie or threatened Sal, but Sarah Leigh was no angel either."
Josie bounced in her seat excitedly. "Holy cow. We've got a bunch of suspects. If we could only find out who took Nicoletta's shawl, I think it would lead us to the killer. Am I right, Sal?"
"Sure." The ship had set sail a short time ago, and already the waves were causing me to experience motion sickness. I tried to fight off the feeling and offered Cookie a bite of my mashed potatoes, but she shook her head and shut her mouth.
"Cookie doodle, you have to eat," I said.
"No!" She started wriggling in the chair and began to cry. Mike lifted her up out of the highchair and placed her on his lap. He offered her a spoonful of applesauce, which she eagerly accepted.
Grandma Rosa was watching me closely. "Are you all right, cara mia? You look pale."
"I'm all right. A little tired, I guess." Nausea rolled through my stomach again. I stopped eating and began to take sips from my glass of water.
"You don't do well on boats," Josie remarked. "Remember that trip in high school on the sailboat? You lost your lunch in the water."
My stomach rumbled in response. "Thanks for reminding me."
Mike shot me a sly wink as he offered Cookie her sippy cup. "Maybe it's something else causing Sal to feel sick."
My cheeks heated. It certainly would make this feeling easier to bear if I thought I was pregnant. "That would be nice."
"Sweetheart, why don't you go back to the cabin and lie down? You've had a stressful day," Mike suggested.
